Scope of Work
The detailed description of what work is included — and what isn't.
What it means
The scope of work (SOW) defines exactly what work a contract covers: the tasks, materials, deliverables, and standards — and, just as importantly, what is excluded. On construction projects it usually references the plans and specifications. A vague scope is the root of most 'I thought that was included' disputes.
Why it matters before you sign
Every gap or ambiguity in the scope becomes a negotiation later, usually mid-project when you have the least leverage — pin down inclusions and exclusions before signing.
In a contract, it looks like this
The scope of work includes framing per the architectural plans dated March 1, but excludes all electrical, plumbing, and finish work.
